Graduate Council
The Graduate Council is an advisory body, composed of the Graduate Program Directors, the Graduate Dean, and the Provost. The function of the Graduate Council is to recommend modifications or changes in graduate policy to the Provost. The primary objectives of the Graduate Council are to promote excellence in research and scholarship beyond the undergraduate level and to strengthen existing graduate programs. The Graduate Council meets regularly during the academic year. A scribe takes minutes at each meeting and prepares the minutes for review and dissemination by the Graduate Dean. Generally meeting agendas (including any relevant proposals or other attachments) are disseminated approximately one week prior to the meeting. Minutes of the prior meetings are reviewed at each meeting. The Office of the Graduate Dean maintains a record of the minutes of the meetings of the Graduate Council.
- Composition: The voting members of the Graduate Council include the directors of each graduate program, and two graduate student representatives. The Graduate Dean and the Provost are non-voting ex-officio members.
- Accountability: The Council forwards recommendations to the Provost.
- Jurisdiction: The Graduate Council is the advisory body that provides the academic governance function of the Graduate Division and its programs at Mount Saint Mary’s University, Los Angeles.
- Functions: The function of the Graduate Council is to conduct meetings and other processes that generate recommendation regarding graduate programs and graduate program policy at Mount Saint Mary’s University, Los Angeles. Among the specific concerns of the Graduate Council are:
- The promotion of excellence in scholarship and research

- Degree approval
- Program review
- Review of policies related to graduate programs and students
