Sociology
Sociology is the study of human behavior within a multitude of contexts, from the family, school, community and in the business world, from the regional, national, and global arenas.
The major prepares students for professional careers in a wide range of fields, such as working with youth and families, race/ethnic relations, human resources, social services, community relations, and human rights advocacy. Sociology also provides an excellent foundation for graduate studies in youth counseling, marriage and family therapy, public policy, urban development, public health, and the law. The major can also prepare students, in collaboration with the Education Department, for K-12 teaching. Medical schools list Sociology as a recommended option for an undergraduate bachelor's degree as well, combined with required chemistry and biology coursework.
An important feature of the Mount Sociology Major is the infusion across the curriculum of human rights knowledge and principles as put forth in the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
In addition to the general program of study in Sociology, there is the option of three specializations within the major: Human Rights, Youth and Family Counseling, or Medical Sociology.
