HIS 177 History of Law and the Legal Profession
What are the origins of the legal profession? How have lawyers changed over time? Why does the US legal system use so much Latin? How did law shape so many aspects of life in various societies—from marriage to inheritance to loaning money to adoption to women’s rights to murder and more? This course seeks answers to these and many other questions by tracing the evolution of the legal tradition over the centuries, starting with Ancient Greece and Rome, continuing through the Middle Ages, and ending just as the United States is emerging as a nation. Students will learn about the ways that modern law and legal practice are directly and indirectly rooted in a field that developed over centuries—lessons that will form a clearer and more thorough understanding of the legal word we live in.
