Language Fulfillment Alternative
This requirement may be satisfied by any of the following alternatives:
- A student who begins a language must complete French 1 and 2, Japanese 1 and 2, or Spanish 1 and 2, or their equivalent. For other languages, students must complete the equivalent of the second semester or third quarter.
- Weekend College students may choose to complete the language requirement by taking two courses in either Spanish or French culture.
- Students whose native language is not English may demonstrate academic proficiency in English as a second language by passing the TOEFL examination with scores above 550.
- Students may take placement exams offered by MSMU’s Language and Culture Department in Spanish, French or Japanese to fulfill the requirement. Students whose language placement scores indicate eligibility for the third semester of a language are waived from the Modern language requirement but with no units awarded.
