Ethnic Studies Minor

Program Goals

 

All courses leading to the successful completion of the Ethnic Studies Minor will reflect one or more of the program goals listed below.

  • Students will utilize a lens that critically examines the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, migration, and other structures of power.

  • Students will analyze socioeconomic and political experiences, draw upon artistic expression and popular culture, and consider movements of resistance, activism, and insurrection. 

  • Students will utilize an emancipatory and decolonial orientation to challenge the social constructions of race.

  • Students will utilize transdisciplinary approaches and multi-methods.

  • Students will apply the concepts in ethnic studies to their own lives and the world around them.

Requirements for the Ethnic Studies Minor

For successful completion of the Ethnic Studies Minor, students must take a total of 18 units. Unit and course requirements are broken down as follows:


Content Area/Electives

9 Upper Division units derived from any of the following content areas/electives:

  • ENS 130 Filipina/o American Experience and Narratives (3 units)
  • ENS 135 Conflicts and Collaborations in Los Angeles (3 units)
  • ENS 150 Colonization and Empire (3 units)
  • ENS 155 Latinx Studies (3 units)
  • ENS 160 Black Studies (3 units)
  • ENS 165 Indigenous Studies (3 units)
  • ENS 170 Special Topics in Ethnic Studies (3 units, may be repeated for credit)
  • Elective Offerings from Other Departments
    • PSY 167 Special Topics: Asian American Psychology (3 units)
    • FLM 168 Race, Sex, and Hollywood (3 units)
The three courses taken to satisfy the content area/elective requirements for the minor in Ethnic Studies may not double count towards LACE, major, or other minor requirements.
