ART 183 Woman on Top: Women and the Media

This course will examine images of women in the media - videos, movies, magazines, advertising, art, and social platforms - from the ancient world to today. Women, who have been portrayed in the visual arts more than any other single subject, have been depicted as mothers and sexual objects, vixens and saints, virgins, and prostitutes… Their representations, mostly by males, offer an insight on the way in which diverse ideologies have shaped popular attitudes towards women and often used their portrayal to fabricate and maintain images that justify and perpetuate their oppression, overpowering, and victimization.
