FLM 252A Film Noir and the City

This course is an analysis of the Hollywood crime dramas characteristic of the 1940s and 1950s that featured cops, crimes, gangsters and femme fatales. The social context that reflected darker times of the depression, the tension of the world war, urban sophistication, and the fight against evil will be explored as expressed and symbolized in this film genre. The history and urban development of Los Angeles will also be explored in conjunction with the genre. Students will have opportunities to visit one or more key locations in Los Angeles that relate to the development of the city and the Noir genre (1920’s-1950’s).
