HCA 211 Leading Dissemination, Implementation, and Change

Experts suggest it takes 17 years on average for research evidence to reach medical practice. The ultimate impact of health innovations depends then not merely on their effectiveness in studies, but also on the extent to which providers and health leaders disseminate them to the population and adopt, implement, and maintain them in care over time. Despite substantial advances in evidence-based medicine and practice, a research-to-practice gap remains, limiting our ability to improve health and quality of life. Implementing evidence-based practice and managing organizational change has become a significant responsibility and a key competency for healthcare managers. Managing the change process within health organizations is important because appropriately and systematically adopting, implementing, and maintaining evidence based medicine is linked to improved organizational performance and population outcomes. However, change is difficult for everyone and the change process poses formidable challenges for healthcare managers who face pressure to respond to internal and external influences affecting their organizations.  This course lays a foundation on the important topic of organizational change toward evidence-based practice in health organizations so students can learn how to provide the necessary leadership during the change process as they work towards improving population health outcomes and organizational performance.
