LIN 101 Introduction to Linguistics

This course is an introduction to the methods that linguists have developed to analyze and describe the differences of languages in the world. It will provide a basic overview of the field of linguistics and the diverse ways in which individual languages approach the processes of how words and sentences are formed (morphology and syntax, respectively), the sound system (phonetics and phonology), and how linguistic structure and context give rise to meaning (semantics and pragmatics). In addition, it will focus on how social practices shape and are shaped by language use (sociolinguistics) in a local and global context and how language is acquired and learned. The goals of the course are to provide a grounding in linguistics as a field of study, to provide basic analytic skills for viewing and discussing language from a variety of perspectives, and to bring students to a global awareness and understanding of the relevance of language in our daily lives.
