GLP 183 History of Black Nationalist Movements in Africa
This course introduces the student to the concept of nationalism in Africa, its proponents, and the main stages of development of nationalism from colonial period to the present-day. African nationalism is here understood as a concept that emerged in the colonial era in Africa and which, nevertheless, became important in the establishment of the present-day nation-states and how these nation states were (and are) run. This study undertakes a survey of nationalism with case studies from East Africa, Central Africa, West Africa and Southern Africa. The region that lies north of Sahara (North Africa) is not included in this study for the reason that North Africa tends to have closer ties (culturally and historically) with the Middle East. The course ends with a discussion on the challenges and prospects of the nation-state in Africa. GE 5C.
