HCA 233G Understanding Health Insurance Systems
This course provides the student with an overview of the organization and financing of health systems in the United States. We begin with the concept of finance flows in the US health sector and explore the main models and benefits packages for population coverage – including national health insurance, private insurance, and mixed models. We use the various iterations of health and sickness insurance to grasp the purpose and role of health insurance in the US health industry, exploring inherent issues, problems, and solutions within US healthcare payment system. We give particular attention to what that means for managing healthcare and improving outcomes in the US. Students learn key aspects of Medicare, Medicaid, other government programs, and private payers, and the role each of these play in access to health care and variable health outcomes in America.
