ENS 35 Conflicts and Collaborations in Los Angeles

Students will explore the modern diversity of Los Angeles, with a lens that highlights its original frontier foundations and how that paved the way for the development of a sprawling, uniquely international coalescence of cultures today. We will track many of the trials and tribulations faced by migrant populations as they sought, and continue to seek, economic opportunity, political representation, social equality and even available land in the region. This course will also shed light on the organized voices that speak up for social justice issues and students will uncover the houses of worship, architectural styles, cuisines, art, music and other expressions of culture that give us context to a city plagued by inequity and division to this day. Cross-listed with ENS 135.
