HIS 2A Civilizations, Empires, and Trading Networks

This course explores the history of the world to 1500, focusing on: the emergence of early humans and cultures; the rise of agriculture and urban society; the civilizations of antiquity (Egypt, Greece, and Rome); the civilizations and empires of South Asia; the founding of Islam and the Islamic empires and caliphates of the seventh through twelfth centuries; the trading networks of West Africa, Inner and East Asia, the Indian Ocean; and the Silk Road; the history of the spice trade; Europe’s early interactions with the non-Western world; the collapse of the feudal order in Europe following the Black Death; and the restructuring of Europe during the Renaissance.
