This course explores the history of the world since 1500, focusing on: the rise of the West; the world networks of West Africa—the Mediterranean—and the Middle East, Inner and East Asia, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic World; the complex interaction between Europe and the Americas, including the ‘Columbian Exchange’; the creation of colonial empires in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; the impact of global trade and industrialization on the world; the global conflicts of the twentieth century, including the World Wars and Cold War; and the lasting legacies of these histories.
