SOC 187 Environmental Studies
It is now acknowledged that environmental issues are inevitably social issues, and these can be understood by an examination of their social roots. The course therefore attempts to understand
the social roots of environmental problems, and social responses to these problems. This course will examine the interactions between society and the environment. Sometimes named Sustainability Studies, this is quickly becoming one of the most important topics as the global population faces increasingly pressing environmental challenges, including climate change, industrial development and pollution, and sources of renewable energy versus non-renewable energy. Students will also learn modern conservation methods and techniques, and adopt a transformative mindset so they can become an effective agent of change. Course concepts presented will be primarily applied to the Southern California environment. Familiarity with Arc-GIS Desktop is recommended but not required.
