SW 152 Grief, Loss, & Bereavement

This course provides an introduction to grief, loss, and bereavement as it occurs throughout the life span as viewed by individuals, families, groups, communities, and societies. In this course, topics of grief and loss will include, but not limited to death/dying, anticipatory grief, divorce, loss of close relationships, loss of a job, effects of natural disasters, declines in physical or mental health, etc. This course will examine theories on grief, loss, and bereavement and consider how factors such as culture, ethnicity/race, gender, sexual orientation, age, class, religion, health status, etc. may impact the grieving and coping process. Students will learn about the role of social work with regard to effective use of the professional self with clients and their families in diverse settings in addressing grief, loss, and bereavement.
