EDU 132 Observing, Recording, and Assessing Young Children

Students will use alternative formats (recording strategies, rating systems, portfolios, and multiple assessment tools) for recording observations of children’s development. Students will use observational data to diagnose children’s interests, developmental levels, learning needs, and collaboration with families and professionals. Examines a variety of formal and informal assessment techniques utilized in early childhood education classrooms. The basic principles of child development will be reviewed and their application in the early childhood setting by means of observation and curriculum planning. Students will have the opportunity to receive a certificate in Meaningful Observation for the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) assessment tool, which is widely used in state-funded childcare programs and Early Head Start/Head Start programs in the state of California.
