HIS 101A Introduction to Humanities Research and the Digital Humanities

Students will learn about the diverse methodologies involved in humanities research, as well as digital capture, preservation, and curation of humanities artifacts and source material. The academic disciplines most often associated with the humanities include music, history, religion, literature, linguistics, languages, visual arts, philosophy, and the dramatic arts. Given the multiplicity of “humanities,” there is no single methodology employed by all the humanities. Nonetheless, many of the methods are critical, speculative, or involve some form of historical reflection. Beyond the humanities research methodologies, the course also includes lessons, exercises, and tutorials in the most basic aspects of digital production, visual exhibition, text analysis, data visualization, map and timeline generation, and digital repository curation.
