HIS 128 The Rise and Fall of Empires
This course examines the rise and fall of empires in world history. The focus will be on the patterns and consequences of imperialism in both the premodern and modern eras. Topics include the fall and aftermath of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Islamic caliphates, and the Mongol, Ottoman, Russian, French, British, and Japanese empires. Special attention will be given to postcolonialism and subaltern resistance in the twentieth century. GE 5A or 5C.
