HIS 129 The Mediterranean World
This course examines several key cultures and civilizations in the Mediterranean region roughly between the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of the Ottoman Empire. Topics include the evolution of post-Roman societies in Late Antiquity, the Byzantine Empire, the rise of Islam and the caliphates, the Crusades, the age of travel and exploration, and the Ottoman conquests. Special attention will be given to the movement of people and ideas across religious, cultural, linguistic, and political borders. GE 5A or 5C.
