FLM 180 Colonial and Postcolonial Cinema

This course will examine how colonial and postcolonial discourses have been implicated in cinematic practices, particularly in Africa, and the Global South. The class uses films and writings that explore indigenous culture and rituals by Lusophone, Anglophone, and Latin American, Asian, and African American artists/filmmakers that specifically deal with questions related to cinema and its connection to culture and politics in society. In addition, the class will give students the opportunity to think critically about representation, the manifestations of colonial stereotypes in today's media culture, and the potential power in giving agency to the once colonized a medium to give voice to their history and culture.
