HCA 233C Diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultural competence in healthcare

Managing diversity and inclusion has evolved in healthcare from focusing on compliance to a strategic effort that has demonstrated positive impact on an organization's performance. Evidence suggests that, in the current climate, healthcare organizations that strive both for diversity and inclusion achieving intended organizational goals. Patients receiving care in these contexts - that is, in systems that provide care to patients with diverse values, beliefs, and behaviors, including tailoring delivery to meet patients' social, cultural, and linguistic needs - show improved outcomes. This provides strong support for the idea that diversity and inclusion - within the organization and in patient care - are much more than a legal or moral requirement; they're also provide competitive advantages and improve patient health. In this course, students will come to understand their own individual and cultural position in the workplace and the other styles and approaches their colleagues might bring to their jobs. We help students understand the sources of conflict that may ensue at these intersections of culture, personality, and style, as well as ways they can use this diversity as an asset in team building, care provision, and problem solving. We present students with targeted and high-involvement diversity practices, examining diversity in the contexts of teams and leaders. During this course, you will complete a project in which you identify sources of inclusion, align inclusion to improve employee engagement and organizational results, and determine methods to assess the effectiveness of inclusion initiatives. At the end of the course, you will use the results from the project to prepare a final presentation describing how to apply your work to your organization.
