MUS 159 Music Research Methods

Introduction to music research tools, materials, and techniques. The focus of the course will include major references and indexes, database, and internet research. The course will be relevant to each emphasis and will encompass both quantitative and qualitative research. Topics include research design, data collection, analysis, and presentation. Students will learn how to develop research questions, select appropriate methodologies, and design studies to address their research goals.  They will also explore methods for collecting data, such as interviews, observation, archival research, and ethnographic fieldwork, and learn how to analyze data using quantitative and qualitative methods. Additionally, students will learn how to write research papers and present their findings to various audiences. Throughout the course, students will work on their own research projects and receive feedback from the instructor and peers. By the end of the course, students will have a strong foundation in research methods in musicology and ethnomusicology.
