EDU 148 Literacy in the Content Area: Elementary Curriculum

This class will focus on evidence-based integrated content and literacy instruction for all students that is active, motivating, and engaging, and grounded in asset-based pedagogies, inclusive approaches, and culturally and linguistically affirming and sustaining practices. Candidates will have opportunities to design and analyze instructional materials and tasks that aim to promote students’ content knowledge through the integration of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in discipline-specific ways. Particular focus will be put on the advancement of students’ foundational skills, meaning making, academic language development, and higher order thinking that will support them as they read and write increasingly complex disciplinary texts with comprehension and effective expression. Candidates will learn how to incorporate social and emotional learning and trauma-informed practices into their literacy teaching repertoire. They will also learn to engage families in student literacy development. Opportunities to observe and practice in the field will complement class instruction.
