EXS 30 Community, Global Awareness & Understanding: A Gender-Inclusive Approach

This course explores the complex interconnections between local and global communities with a focus on women’s roles, contributions, and unique challenges across the world. It emphasizes the importance of cultural awareness, social responsibility, and global citizenship through a gender-inclusive lens. Students will examine how global events, economic systems, environmental issues, and cultural differences impact women in particular, and how women are central to creating change in their communities.

By studying the intersectionality of gender with other global issues, students will explore the challenges women face regarding human rights, global inequalities, environmental sustainability, international development, migration, and conflict resolution. Through case studies of women-led movements, discussions on women's empowerment, and collaborative projects, the course aims to develop an understanding of the opportunities for advancing gender equality while fostering interconnected communities worldwide. Topics will include:

1.  The role of women in global human rights movements

2.  Gender inequality in education, health, and economic opportunities

3.  Women in environmental activism and sustainability efforts

4.  The impact of migration on women, particularly in refugee and

     migrant communities

5.  Women as leaders in conflict resolution and peace building

6.  Gender and its intersection with other forms of identity

     (race, class, etc.)

Students will also engage in critical thinking about how to foster gender equality, ensure women’s voices are heard in global issues, and work toward more equitable, interconnected communities. Enhancing communication skills for working in multicultural and gender-diverse global contexts will also be a key focus.
