EXS 40 Introduction to Wellness Coaching: Motivational Interviewing

This course introduces students to the foundational principles and techniques of wellness coaching, with a primary focus on motivational interviewing (MI), an evidence-based communication style designed to enhance client motivation for behavior change. Students will learn the key concepts and skills of MI, including how to build rapport, listen empathetically, and guide clients in exploring and resolving ambivalence about making positive lifestyle changes. The course will also cover wellness coaching strategies for addressing issues such as physical activity, nutrition, stress management, and overall health improvement. Through role-playing, case studies, and interactive exercises, students will gain practical experience in applying MI techniques to support clients in achieving and sustaining their wellness goals. Emphasis will be placed on creating a client-centered, non-judgmental approach to behavior change, fostering autonomy, and promoting long-term health and wellness.  This course is ideal for students pursuing careers in wellness coaching, health promotion, fitness training, counseling, nutrition, or any field where helping individuals achieve lasting lifestyle changes is a central focus.
