POL 107 Race, Gender, and the Criminal Legal System

This course analyzes criminal law and procedure in the United States. Emphasis will be placed on the intersections between race and gender identity and the criminal law, from arrest to prosecution and incarceration. Students will examine court cases and the works of leading scholars in the field to explore and analyze issues including structural inequities, mass incarceration, police brutality and biases, the rights of transgender and other LGBTQ+ individuals, and the experiences and treatment of women in all aspects of the criminal legal system.
