PSY 198B The Magic of Play=Designing Playful Learning Environments II

This course will continue in students learning the ways children across cultures and communities learn and develop through play. With emphasis on learning in contexts outside of the classroom (e.g. at home or in the community), students will expand their understanding of how play leads to learning and about the value of play, including greater depth or expansion on the types of play and factors that facilitate or prevent playful learning (e.g. the role of parents and adults), as well as about play across contexts or groups. Students in this course will practice art techniques and apply knowledge of how to design products and spaces for play and learning.  In this second of two-part series on Play and Learning, students will apply feedback from their design proposal, construct and prototype/test a product (exhibit, research toy, etc.) that fulfills an existing need for those children and families and apply evaluation skills to identify the successes and areas for improvement in their design and final product. Carries an Art lab fee. GE 6B when linked with ART 198A/PSY 198A. Prerequisite PSY 198A or equivalent.
