PSY 254B Suicide Risk Assessment & Intervention
This online course meets the State of California and Board of Behavioral Sciences mandated requirement for 6 hours of training and supervision in suicide risk assessment and intervention. Students will develop strategies for the prevention and assessment of the suicidal client, as well as, advanced intervention techniques. In addition, students will examine the legal and ethical issues related to reporting and managing clients who are a danger to themself or others. This course is taken concurrent with PSY 254 Crisis and Trauma and must be completed for credit while enrolled in PSY 254.
COURSE OBJECTIVES/STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course, students will:
1. Identify risk factors associated with the suicidal client (Program Outcomes 1 & 2)
2. Demonstrate assessment strategies and tools for evaluating the suicidal client (Program Outcomes 1 & 2)
3. Demonstrate intervention strategies for preventing suicide and managing the client at risk for suicide (Program Outcomes 2, 3 & 4)
4. Identify family and community responses to suicide and develop strategies for dealing with these responses (Program Outcomes 3 & 4)
5. Explore the legal and ethical issues related to the reporting and management of clients who are a danger to themselves or others (Program Outcome 5)
6. Examine their own emotional responses and behaviors associated with working with the suicidal client (Program Outcomes 2)
