PSY 274B Child Abuse
This online course meets the State of California and Board of Behavioral Sciences mandated requirement for 7 hours of training in the assessment, reporting and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Students will learn to assess for evidence of child physical, sexual or emotional abuse and neglect. As a mandated reporter of child abuse and neglect, students will explore reporting guidelines and procedures and will review the legal and ethical factors that pertain to reporting and limits of confidentiality in cases of child abuse and neglect. Finally, students will develop strategies for working with children and their families who are abused and/or neglected. This course is taken concurrent with PSY 274 Child and Adolescent Counseling and must be completed for credit while enrolled in PSY 274.
COURSE OBJECTIVES/STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course, students will:
- Identify the different types of abuse. (Program Outcome 1)
- Assess children and adolescents for evidence of abuse or neglect. (Program Outcome 1 & 2)
- Make a child abuse report required by law in California (Program Outcome 5)
- Understand the psychological effects of abuse during childhood and later into adulthood (Program Outcome 1 & 2)
- Develop strategies for working with children and their families who have been abused or neglected. (Program Outcome 3 & 4)
