PHI 225 Pediatric Bioethics

In this course we look at ethical decision-making regarding children under the control of parents or other guardians, or possibly ethics committees or judges. We will consider if minors should have the right to weigh into the decision-making. What about withholding or withdrawing treatment? Should a child be allowed to stop treatment they consider futile or unacceptably painful? And what about experimental treatment, as with Baby Fae, the infant who got a baboon heart transplant? As part of our study, we will look at particular cases highlighting ethical dilemmas regarding children.
