PHI 250 Ethics at the Beginning & the End of Life

Should we have the right to determine what happens to our own bodies? What if that decision impacts a fetus or embryo? Is an embryo a person? What about using a surrogate to gestate “my” baby? Reproductive freedom ranges over a wide and significant territory and is among the most pressing moral problems today. At the other extreme: Should we be able to decide the endpoint of our lives? Is it ethical to experiment on brain dead patients? Who should decide when a life is at stake— patients? parents? spouses? doctors? courts? We will look at the four state interests and key court cases and issues raised by passive vs active and voluntary vs involuntary euthanasia and physician assisted suicide.
