PHI 230 Bioethics and the Law

As seen with Roe vs. Wade being struck down, the boundaries of the law can have a profound effect on our lives. In this course we will look at this and other pivotal decisions. For example, we will consider Schloendorff and Cobbs vs. Grant and the legal history of informed consent. A related concern is the right to decide what happens to your own body including the right to refuse or withdraw from treatment and the right to buy or sell organs. We will also consider issues health professionals face in a pandemic, such as the boundaries of the duty to treat.
