PHI 171 Philosophy of Race
What is “race”? Does it denote a real difference in people? Is it constructed? Does it only serve to justify those in power? This course will examine philosophical views on the ontology of race, the meaning of race in society, and the importance of diverse voices in philosophical discourse. This will include reflecting on the impact of race on our theories of knowledge, theories of beauty, ethics, and political thought. This transdisciplinary course will include readings from influential thinkers such as W.E.B. DuBois, Cornel West, Angela Davis, Jorge Garcia, and Maria Lugones. Prerequisite: none. Can be applied for Ethnic Studies credit. GE 6 unlinked or GE 5B.
