PHI 180 The Philosophy of Change

Philosophy has traditionally investigated the enduring, the eternal, the unchanging and essential Being. But there is an entirely different philosophical school that founds itself on what appears to be the exact opposite by focusing instead on change, process, and becoming. This course will investigate this often overlooked branch of philosophy, and readings may include Laozi, Heraclitus, Zhuangzi, Spinoza, Zen Buddhism, Existentialism, the American Pragmatists, and Whitehead. Trading eternal being for change in temporal becoming brings with it philosophical challenges in metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics. This class will contrast the Philosophy of Change with its traditional counterparts, and we will use the analyses of philosophical becoming to re-interpret current issues as they arise. GE 5C
