SW 100 Fundamentals in APA Style
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and application of American Psychological Association (APA) style and scholarly writing within the social sciences. Students will develop foundational knowledge and practical skills in organizing, writing, formatting, and presenting academic papers and research manuscripts in accordance with current APA standards. Emphasis is placed on developing clear, effective, and ethical scholarly communication and preparing students for successful engagement in research-focused coursework. Topics include writing for the social sciences; paper and manuscript structure and content; principles of effective academic writing and mechanics of style; organization and presentation of information and research findings; use and presentation of tables and figures; paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting; ethical and accurate attribution of sources; in-text citations; reference lists; and other conventions of scholarly writing and academic integrity. The course is designed to provide students with foundational skills that support success in subsequent quantitative and qualitative research methods courses and other upper-division coursework requiring academic and research writing.
