SW 198 Advanced Social Work Advocacy, Leadership, and Research
This course provides advanced opportunities for students to strengthen leadership, research, advocacy, and professional competencies in preparation for graduate education and professional social work practice. Building upon foundational research knowledge and skills, students engage in faculty-mentored research while participating in advanced learning experiences that foster leadership development, professional identity, and evidence-informed practice. Emphasis is placed on the application of research methods, scholarly writing, professional presentations, policy advocacy, and civic engagement through activities such as Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) certification, Institutional Review Board (IRB) application development and support, conference proposal development and presentations, legislative advocacy experiences, peer mentorship, and other experiential learning opportunities, as resources and opportunities permit. The course is conducted in a seminar and research colloquium format emphasizing collaboration, critical dialogue, scholarly inquiry, professional leadership, and experiential learning.
