This course provides a summer Practicum Education experience for BSSW students who require additional hours to fulfill their senior-year practicum requirements. Students continue to apply social work knowledge, values, ethics, and skills in a supervised practicum setting while integrating classroom learning with professional practice. Through the completion of 100–200 practicum hours, students continue to develop and demonstrate generalist social work competencies by engaging with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities while serving diverse populations under the supervision of a qualified professional social worker. This course supports the completion of the BSSW Practicum Education requirements and serves as the capstone Practicum Education experience for the major.
Practicum Education is a required component of the BSSW program and is completed during the senior year. Students must successfully complete SW_102 during the Spring semester immediately prior to the senior year, along with all required prerequisite courses, followed by the senior-year Practicum Education sequence: SW_113 (Fall) and SW_114 (Spring). These courses must be completed in sequence. Refer to the individual course descriptions for specific prerequisite requirements. Failure to successfully complete SW_102, SW_113, or SW_114 as required may require the student to repeat the course the next time it is offered, which may delay graduation.
Specific senior-level BSSW courses have prerequisite requirements that apply to ALL students who enroll in those courses. For BSSW majors, BEFORE enrolling in senior-level coursework, students must successfully complete the following courses, which establish the prerequisites for senior-level study: SW_001, SW_006, SW_038, SW_100, SW_109, SW_121, and SW_128; of these, SW_001, SW_006, and SW_038 may be satisfied through a transfer equivalent approved by the Department of Social Work. Refer to the individual course descriptions for specific prerequisite requirements. Failure to complete these prerequisite requirements may prevent progression into the senior-year curriculum.
The following courses in the BSSW program are designated as senior-level courses. For BSSW majors, these courses must be taken DURING the senior year: SW_104, SW_111, SW_113, SW_114, SW_122, and SW_129. All students, regardless of major, must successfully complete all required prerequisite courses prior to enrolling in these senior-level courses. Non-majors may enroll in these courses prior to the senior year; however, enrollment is recommended after completing sufficient upper-division coursework to develop the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to successfully engage in senior-level coursework.
