SW 104 Human Behavior in the Social Environment
This course is a required senior-level BSSW course that provides an exploration of major biopsychosocial theories and theories of human behavior and development across the lifespan, with a focus on infancy through adolescence. Students will examine human development and behavior among individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities through the lenses of diversity, social justice, ecological perspectives, and empowerment. This course provides the theoretical foundation for generalist social work practice.
Specific senior-level BSSW courses have prerequisite requirements that apply to ALL students who enroll in those courses. For BSSW majors, BEFORE enrolling in senior-level coursework, students must successfully complete the following courses, which establish the prerequisites for senior-level study: SW_001, SW_006, SW_038, SW_100, SW_109, SW_121, and SW_128; of these, SW_001, SW_006, and SW_038 may be satisfied through a transfer equivalent approved by the Department of Social Work. Refer to the individual course descriptions for specific prerequisite requirements. Failure to complete these prerequisite requirements may prevent progression into the senior-year curriculum.
The following courses in the BSSW program are designated as senior-level courses. For BSSW majors, these courses must be taken DURING the senior year: SW_104, SW_111, SW_113, SW_114, SW_122, and SW_129. All students, regardless of major, must successfully complete all required prerequisite courses prior to enrolling in these senior-level courses. Non-majors may enroll in these courses prior to the senior year; however, enrollment is recommended after completing sufficient upper-division coursework to develop the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to successfully engage in senior-level coursework.
