SW 117 Quantitative Research Methods in Social Work
This course provides an introduction to quantitative research methods used in social work and the social sciences. Students will develop the knowledge and competence in quantitative research methods needed to design and conduct independent research in social work practice and social welfare policy. The course focuses on the fundamental steps involved in selecting and implementing research designs that are appropriate for answering contemporary social work practice and social welfare policy research questions. Through the completion of a quantitative research project, students will formulate a research question, examine relevant research theories and literature, collect and analyze quantitative data, interpret research findings, and produce research writing in APA style.
BEFORE enrolling in SW_117 and SW_118, BSSW students must successfully complete SW_038, SW_109, and SW_100. These prerequisite courses provide foundational knowledge and skills necessary for success in the Research Methods sequence. SW_117 must be completed before SW_118; therefore, students should plan to complete SW_117 during the Fall semester immediately followed by SW_118 during the Spring semester. Failure to complete these courses in the required sequence may delay progression through the BSSW curriculum.
