SW 118 Qualitative Research Methods in Social Work
This course provides an introduction to qualitative research methods used in social work and the social sciences. Students will gain an understanding of the fundamental steps involved in designing and conducting qualitative research, with a focus on interviewing techniques as a method of data collection. Through the completion of a qualitative research project, students will formulate a research question, examine relevant research theories, collect and code primary data, analyze qualitative findings, and produce research writing in APA style.
BEFORE enrolling in SW_117 and SW_118, BSSW students must successfully complete SW_038, SW_109, and SW_100. These prerequisite courses provide foundational knowledge and skills necessary for success in the Research Methods sequence. SW_117 must be completed before SW_118; therefore, students should plan to complete SW_117 during the Fall semester immediately followed by SW_118 during the Spring semester. Failure to complete these courses in the required sequence may delay progression through the BSSW curriculum.
