Screen adaptations of literary works have made for some of the most acclaimed and lucrative movies in the history of motion pictures. Adapting literary material for the screen is a common practice within the Hollywood studio system and has been since the early days of filmmaking. But for the independent writer with no legal team, there are many things to consider before embarking on the journey of adapting a literary work for the screen, from both a creative and legal standpoint. In this course, we will navigate some of the steps an independent writer should take before trying to adapt a literary work. We will also delve into the creative writing process of adapting a book for the screen. Students will leave the course with a screenplay treatment of a book they’d like to adapt and a strong foundation in the process of properly preparing a literary adaption for the screen, creatively and legally.
