CRW 299D Studies in Publishing: Journals and Magazines

Before getting their first book deal, many professional writers cut their teeth with shorter published work. In this course, we’ll examine the history of journals and magazines that gave illustrious authors their first breaks. Readings and critical analysis assignments will explore what makes long-running brands endure, from lit mags like The New Yorker to speculative fiction outlets like The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. After researching open submission guidelines and learning manuscript formatting along with cover letter etiquette, students will workshop multiple short pieces before submitting to an outlet best suited for their voice.
