CRW 299C Studies in Publishing: Independent Publishing

Traditional publishing with the Big 5 isn’t the only way for a writer to build a readership. In this course, we’ll focus on the thriving world of independent publishing as a viable path toward a creative career. Extensive reading will lay the groundwork for students to write critical essays on the history of publishing, the art of reading, and the digital revolution. Coursework will also include workshopping short student work as well as investigative case studies of successful independent presses that will inform sustainable practices. In the final creative project, students will present a creative pitch deck detailing a proposal for their own independent publishing imprint.
