CRW 299G Studies in Publishing: Marketing and Sales

When the writing is done, how do you get your work into the right reader’s hands? In this course, we’ll explore the open submission outlets in various writing formats and genres, from essays in literary journals to short stories in speculative fiction magazines. We’ll also investigate the traditional book sales route, from querying agents through the dealmaking process. As publishers continue to cut marketing budgets, authors are expected to hone their personal brand and market their own work. To that end, course readings and assignments will dig into the theory and psychology behind effective marketing strategies while surveying current industry trends and practicing tools for the modern publishing landscape.
