CRW 270 Syntax, Structure and Stylistics

This course will examine the syntactical, morphological and grammatical properties of prose, focusing on the structural elements of words and the stylistics of sentences, and paragraphs to improve facility with language. We will study effective prose models by differentiating among sentence patterns, learning about structural linguistics, working with invented languages, and closely considering literary pragmatics. Readings will include The Art of Language Invention From Dark Elves to Sand Worms, the Words Behind World Building; Rhetorical Grammar [Edition 8]; and, selected readings in literary pragmatics and prose. At its core this course is about the power of language and grammatical application to narrative contexts in students' own creative work.
