CRW 298 Autofiction

Like most compelling literature, autofiction, or fictionalized autobiography, raises more questions than it answers. How does autofiction differ from autobiography or memoir? What happens when autofiction intersects with metafiction? Why would a writer stake this claim about their work? Why has autofiction proliferated in the past decade – what is this subgenre a response to or a reaction against? In this seminar we'll read Karl Ove Knausgaard, Annie Ernaux, Julián Herbert, and other practitioners of autofiction while examining philosophies and theories associated with this subgenre of prose; we'll also experiment with writing our own autofiction.
