CRW 237 Short Story

The short story is one of the youngest, strangest, and most diverse forms in the English language. This course introduces students to forerunners in the form (Poe, Joyce, Hemingway), those who pushed it to new stylistic limits (O’Connor, Oates, Barthelme), and contemporary practitioners whose scope and themes open onto new vistas for its possibilities (George Saunders, Yiyun  Li, Edwidge Danticat). Students in this course will read and analyze short stories while writing their own. Workshops will focus on understanding one’s creative practice in relation to the tradition of the short story and how one can contribute to this evolving conceptual category.
