EXS 110 Women and Gender in Exercise Science

This course explores the role of gender, with a specific focus on women, in exercise science, including physical activity, fitness, and health. Students will examine the physiological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that influence women’s participation in physical activity and sports, as well as how gender affects athletic performance and health outcomes. Topics include the impact of hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, menopause, and gender-related health disparities on exercise and training. Additionally, the course will address the history and evolution of gender norms in sport and physical activity, the role of women in sports science research, and the intersectionality of gender with race, class, and other social factors in exercise science. Through case studies, research analysis, and discussion, students will critically engage with contemporary issues in women’s fitness and health, aiming to promote gender equity and inclusion in exercise science.  

This course is ideal for students pursuing careers in exercise science, sports medicine, physical therapy, health promotion, or any field related to fitness and wellness, particularly those interested in promoting gender equity in sports and physical activity.
