EXS 160 Women in Sport: Sociocultural & Psychological Perspectives
This course explores the sociocultural and psychological dimensions of women’s participation in sport, examining how gender influences both the experience and the representation of women in athletics. Students will critically analyze the historical, cultural, and social factors that have shaped women’s roles in sport, from early exclusion to current efforts toward equality and empowerment. Topics will include the impact of media representation, gender stereotypes, societal expectations, and institutional barriers on women’s access to and involvement in sport. The course will also examine the psychological aspects of women in sport, such as motivation, self-esteem, body image, and mental health, and how these factors impact athletic performance and well-being. Through case studies, research discussions, and critical reflection, students will develop a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities women face in the sports world, as well as strategies for promoting gender equity and inclusion in sport and exercise contexts.
